Today we continued to take down the extension of T22, with troweling in the N part of it and shoveling in the S, where the soil change is less evident. In that portion of the trench (i.e., the extension), we also found a considerable amount of baked clay near the clay feature that has been exposed for awhile in the room. The baked clay is whitish yellow and quite friable; it was nearly impossible to expose it without damaging it, so a good deal of it is now unfortunately gone. However, it is unclear what exactly it was, if anything; it certainly does not appear to have had a firm shape like the clay feature had or the newly-exposed clay basin appears to have in the room. The new clay basin is where we had been digging and not finding the floor; it’s in my drawing. We have not yet dug down to its complete depth; instead, we kept working on the extension and the possible wall that may or may not be in the eastern portion of the extension. I drew the random rocks that are not far below the surface in the extension, but I’m not yet convinced that they are a wall. We’ll know more tomorrow.
