2008-07-07. Monday. Today Nu. substituted for Se., who was doing cattle duty. Started with two workers in locus 109, with the intention that they would finish cleaning and leveling, and then start taking down locus 108 to the same level, leaving the architecture. I began a careful troweling at the intersection of locus 107 and the bedrock slope at the east side of the trench. within the first hour RB suggested that in the interest of architectural drawings, it might be best to take down 108 today, and so I began a trowel pass over the top to make sure i had collected all the sherds from the burning/ sherd scatter feature, and that there was no floor beneath. I quickly uncovered, about 30 cm from that burn feature, one corner of a zoomorphic ceramic andiron, which was fragmented and set at a tilt within the red/orange soil, with lots of burned clay and chunks of charcoal-- I took one C14 sample from this area, good pieces of charcoal from a z of 2282.99 masl. i spent the rest of the day tracing the area of burning to its furthest extent-- and observed that the area of yellowing packed soil cointaining the black and red stains is cut off linearly near the edge of locus 108-- perhaps corresponding to the change in height of the wall running from east to west just south of this feature-- as if the EB context, which is itself at multiple heights-- were terraced and packed down subsequently, perhaps as part of LB construction events. the wall continues at a lowe level in 109-- where there is also a second wall, which i will sketch tomorrow. the architectural drawing has been postponed another day, so i have tomorrow to take down locus 108 at a steady pace, while the workers work at cleaning up 109 for maximal visibiliy, and continuing to clean the excavated walls.
