Narrative

We're dealing with a very difficult situation in WSD. The trench is extremely rocky, making it very slow going. We began the day excavating in locus 09, the tan clayish silt adjacent to the southwest wall. We also took locus 09 down another 10 or so centimeters, since the dark brown silt continues in this area. The locus was full of rocks, mostly small and medium sized (i.e. small enough to remove by hand without breaking). We also removed the two massive stones toward the western quadrant (pictured in the plan for today in my notebook). I spent the afternoon troweling around the clusters of rocks in locus 06, gradually removing some. I'm quite certain that the rocks in this area are all wall fall. Did the same in the south quadrant, where we have a remarkable density of fallen rocks that will take a very long time to remove. In general, material densities were decent today. It's possible that quanitites are picking up a bit toward the center of the trench, but won't know for sure until I read the pottery.
