Narrative

2008-07-13. Sunday. today i took opening levels, then resumed the trowel pass across the floor. it took us the rest of the day to finish it, leaving a smail baulk between the excavated part of locus 107 and the cleaned, arbitrary edge of locus 110. the soil in locus 107 continues to be a homogenous cultural fill, darkk gray-brown with a fair amount of organic content (flecks of charcoal, few large enough to sample). The materials include bones of various sizes-- from whole joint ends and an entire femur yesterday, to tiny slivers, and a horse hoof today. i thought it might be that the fragments are larger near the rockfall-- perhaps from context collision?-- but i brought some large bone pieces out of a quick sounding which i started just north of the LB wall in the south part of the floor. this followed the bedrock as it went down and started to curve out, but did not hit any new soils yet. som epretty decorated sherds, and no small finds though i was looking for more bronze, etc. will look harder tomorrow, as today Roman gave me a piece of a bronze needle which he found in the soil samples from this area of the trench. i took two c14 samples today, one from near the western wall courses and one from the area where i was working, near the LB wall foot on the bedrock.
