Narrative

Today we removed the vessels from Locus 16, the W corner of T22. In all, there were 7 vessels, and hopefully soil samples will be able to be gleaned from all of them, but one was quite smashed and another was open and other soil from the trench may have fallen into it. These are the vessels: T22.20, the small ashtray-shaped vessel; its soil is T22.27. (Each of the soil samples is 7 loci off the vessel, since there are 7 vessels--eg. vessel 20 and its soil 27.) T22.21, the smallest of the sort of bowl-shaped vessels that were clinging to the side of the basin, and its soil T22.28. T22.22, the perfume-flask shaped jar similar to one in Armine's trench, and its soil T22.29. T22.23, the largest of the vessels that clung to the side of the basin, and its soil T22.30. T22.24, the intact (but cracked) jar whose soil (T22.31) might be compromised. T22.25 is the completely smashed vessel that lay beneath T22.24, and its soil T22.32. T22.26, the pithos from the center of the basin; when we removed it, we tried to salvage a base piece and the soil therein, which is now T22.33. Beyond that, we are working to have Loci 17 and 19 meet, somewhere near the N corner of the central room, and during this discovered along the N wall a sloping surface of clay. Could it be a basin extension? Could the "basin" in the center of the central room be truly a basin? Only time will tell.
