Remarks

The NW quadrant of Kurgan 2

The soil in this locus is the same medium brown silty clay loam. Material densities are very low.

Today we continued to come down in the NW quadrant of Kurgan 2. We also continued to clean the rocks covering the tumulus in the NE quadrant. A second set of capstones has appeared to the WNW of the central set. There is also a ‘fence’ around them, that runs just inside of the cromlech. In the N-S section of the NW quadrant there are two lines of stones, as well as layers of clay. Towards the north end of the section, these two rows are atop each other. In the middle, there appears to be a gap in the lower line. The clay is quite thick in some places, almost 10 cm. It extends out from the eastern side of the quadrant, over the area where there are 5 huge rocks at the level of the central cromlech (see map in field book).

Between these two groups of large rocks, there is a large rectangular worked/dressed stone (oriented E-W) sitting atop a short line of medium-sized rock, but about 0.5 m above the level of the central cromlech.
