Remarks

This locus was named in the start of the season (in the original 4x4m unit) to describe the noticeably large stones in what was the central/ westernmost part of the trench. These stones had no clear relationship to any other feature and appeared to be intentionally placed albeit disturbed. Moreover, they were associated with a distinctly different social matrix then that of the rest of the trench (locus 5). After the unit reached its full size, we returned to this context at the end of the season. After articulating the stones it became clear that this conglomeration formed an architectural feature. Situated between loci 9 and 10 we eventually learned that this was not a join between walls, but rather an additional tomb. The chamber is well crafted. On the north side there is one large, long stone. On the south side lining the interior is what appears to be a pillow stone. The western and eastern walls of the chamber are carefully constructed with neatly organized tiers of stones. On the western wall there is seven courses in some areas and four in others (depending on the shapes and sizes of the stones used). In the SW corner there is a 50cm stone that covers a considerably part of the interior wall. The majority, however, as is also the case on the eastern wall is built with 10-20cm stones. It was clear from the start that this context was disturbed. Accordingly we provided a different context number for the fill (locus 39*). The tomb itself was empty. There were no human remains or vessels. Moreover, there was no indication of occupation by a different period. It is worth noting that the tomb is not a perfectly symmetrical construction. I have accordingly taking two sets of measurements both of the exterior and the interior. On the exterior: N wall 1.65m, E wall 1.81m, S wall 1.38m, W wall 2.0m. On the interior: N wall .98m, E wall 1.28m, S wall .7m, W wall 1.48m. The height of the tomb (avrg.) is .65m. The bottom or floor of the tomb appeared to be made from a compact, clay-like matrix.
