The convex base on this fragment and the nice base/body boundary line attributed this sherd to the LBA. Like other LB base fragments from large vessels, this vessel has been slipped with an approximately 1.5mm-thick lighter clay, filled with very coarse sand and grit particles. This layer laminates from the rest of the vessel wall towards the breaks and is much more rough than the general vessel fabric. While the 18cm base diameter measurement is close, it is as yet difficult to estimate the base diameter with our current rim chart (need a transparent base chart). While medium sand inclusions dominate the fabric, there is an almost equal amount of coarse sand particles present. Rotantional striations are evident on the external base surface and slightly visible on the internal surface, more as furrows. The external surface is 20% covered by white corrosion, with some mica popping and inclusions visible poking through--no major corrosion on the internal surface. Breaks are smooth.
