Brown clayish layer below locus 2 wash layer in original 5x5m of operation. I may have started this level a little late, so in section it is visible beginning a bit higher and is thicker than the wash layer. Due to the clay content and bits of organic matter, I originally interpreted this level as the beginning of the floor and so didn't change loci until I thought I reached the compact floor surface. After clearing off what I presumed was the floor surface, (including photographing the level and taking a soil sample) however, stone linear features began to appear at a lower depth resting on bedrock, on what I now take as the actual floor surface. This thick locus 3 layer I now take as the remains of wattle and daub walls of the structure that collapsed and melted into a single level. This new interpretation accounts not only for the thick clay level with no evidence for resurfacing (which might be expected for a thick occupation level), but also for the drop in materials, and small bits of organics that were probably part of the superstructure. I even screened this level thinking it part of the floor, and kept doing so even after revising my interpretation, since we were close to the actual floor anyway. This level also seems to slope down to the south a bit making uniform measurements of the level difficult.
