layer of dark, high organic soil with enclosed contexts of burning, extending 3.2 meters from the west baulk of AC1, until it degrades with the eroding slope of the trench. high bone and sherd count, encloses burnt features such as locus 4-- irregular campfires or small informal hearths. Below a layer of stony collapse. Above a layer of sandy soil, stones and cement. I think this is a preserved surface level-- ie the ground surface within the caravanserai until the collapse of the western wall.
