Feature of unknown function consisting of linear rows of stones, with some apparent fall, in the center of operation WSAC3. The stones were first noted on 27/7/11 as a line of stones running W to N parallel (about 1.5 m away) to the NW wall, in Locus 3. A second line of stones appeared after that, seemingly connected and running N to E about 1.5 m from the NE baulk. As Locus 3 was completed and Locus 5 and 6 were excavated, more stones of this feature appeared near the NW wall, ranging from very large to very small. Locus 8 exposed more of the feature from the NE and it seems that these stones are floating on soil. The line of stones running W to N seems to have two courses and is surrounded by the darker matrix of the overburden, not the lighter brown silty matrix of the cultural fill.
On 30/7/11 one of the large stones (from the extension running N to E) drawn the day before was moved unintentionally from its original position and taken out.
Feature was declared 1/8/11 after excavating Locus 8, although the exact extent of the feature is unknown because we ran out of time in the season to finish excavating it.
On 2/8/2011 we removed the stones that looked to be running N to E, because they were sitting on soil. This left the stone feature as just the line running N to W. The final state of the feature was one full course with one large stone making a second course; these stones sat on the clay cultural fill, not a paved floor, except the westernmost point which does look like it might be sitting on stones of the paved floor. There were several fragments of a very large, coarse ceramic platter between the stone and the clay floor (22) which were bagged in Locus 19.
See notebook for sketches and elevations of stones; given is the top of the central stone in the line of stones running W to N, which had another course whose bottom is roughly 1 meter lower.
