Topsoil removed from the top of the SW quadrant of Kurgan 3. Very low material densities.
The soil in Locus 1 (the topsoil/overburden) is a dark brown clay loam (not very easy to trowel!).
Near the center in the SW quadrant, the rocks covering the kurgan mound are more tightly and carefully arranged. They also appear to be a different kind of rock than those further from the center, they are more rounded in shape and more granular. The rocks away from the center are angular and smooth.
We decided, given the shortness of the season, that no further work would be done at Kurgan 3 in 2013.
