The locus is situated in the northwest part of the room. It was created in order to excavate below or through the floor in this area of the room. The matrix is still wet from heavy rains two days ago, so tough to describe, but overall a clay and silt with patches of ash and black earth, particularly alongside the southwest wall. A soil sample was taken from this burnt deposit. The matrix is extremely dense in animal remains, but not in ceramic. The locus was closed when it hit the decomposing bedrock all along the NE baulk, while the very clayey matrix continued along the SW wall.
To capture that clayey matrix along the SW wall, Locus 47 was created.
