Remarks

This locus was first uncovered in the 4x4m operation and was situated in the center of the eastern half of the trench. In the full 9x12m trench it was located in the SW quadrant of the operation. The context is characterized by a dark grey -- almost ashy -- semi-compact matrix. It is situated in between and outside of the stones collectively referred to as locus (tomb) 3. The soil of this context differs considerably in color and composition from that of neighboring loci. This type of deposit was confined to this region of the trench. The stark contrast in the color and composition of this sediment was our first indication that we might be dealing with a disturbed context. Overall, the matrix contained a moderate amount of materials (including ceramic, obsidian, and bone). The somewhat circular configuration of the locus initially suggested that this was related to a burial or pit feature.
