Remarks

Locus 39 refers to the fill in locus 5, the tomb situated in the southwest corner of T38. Due to the disturbed nature of this architectural feature, the fill and structure constitute two distinct contexts. Originally, I differentiated the higher and lower strata of the fill into loci 39 and 40, but after thorough comparison I determined that any differences in sediment composition were marginal and collapsed the loci. The fill was characterized by a very dark brown -- almost black -- soil matrix. The clasts were medium to fine in nature and the matrix contained few small stone inclusions. It did contain a moderate amount of ceramic sherds, ground stone, and other cultural materials. What made the fill most striking was that, like locus 3 situated above it, was the stark contrast in the sediment to that of the rest of the locus. This is likely the product of the looting episode or disturbance. We found very little bone -- animal or human -- which suggests that the tomb was emptied in its entirety. At the bottom of the fill, on the floor of the chamber we found what appeared to be a pillow stone and a collapsed capstone(s).
