This matrix was directly underlying locus 1, the topsoil and sod. It was characterized by a light tanish brown sediment that contained small white stones (5-10mm in size), which are likely degraded limestone. While it was incredibly compact and difficult to excavate, the matrix itself was fairly fine grained and loose. After 1.5 meters of excavation on the eastern side of the unit (which is situated on a slope) we concluded excavations. We never reached bedrock. Throughout the matrix there were some lenses of a slightly more ashy, grey context. We will consult with a geologist to gain a more in depth understanding of the sedimentation processes present here. Our final depths in the northeast and southeast corners were 1.45m and 1.62m respectively, and the northwest and southwest 66cm and 75 cm.
