Place: Ar/Ts.NT1.C7

This is a very mottled and amorphous deposit that is difficult to define. It was originally outlined as orange clay in the western half of C, but within this orange matrix there are many many lenses of blackened earth and carbon deposits, as well as areas of brown and reddish-brown deposits. As we dug through it, the colors and textures continually changed, but always seemed to be the result of burning on and within this orange clay. The actual depth of the orange clay (not the locus) is difficult to determine, but it is at least 25 cm in some places, while it is 3-5 in others.

The elevations are all over the place because the deposit is extremely uneven -- elevations are labeled on one of the drawings for this reason. The earliest appearance of the orange clay was in a circle along the western baulk - 2166.234 Other elevations for the surface of this orange material are 2165.954 and 2165.754. No bottom elevation yet.

Should note that C6 was an artifact locus within this locus. It was a large concentration of sherds belonging to several vessels lying flat on top of a dense black lense within the orange matrix. Burned lenses were found both above and below this artifact locus.

In the northern half of the orange deposit was a very clear posthole which was photographed. I suspect that it was carved into a point like a stake, because as I cleaned it for the photo the diameter got significantly smaller. Could not confirm this though - walking and working in the area pretty much destroyed it so I couldn't go back and look again.

Lots of fragments of bread molds/oven pieces from this locus--5 different features in all--found during ceramic reading. Must have been an oven in vicinity.
