Remarks

This object is one side of an almost complete crucible for a metal axe. We uncovered two pieces of the mold that fit together, which collectively reveal the length of the blade and the beginning of the area where the handle would be attached. This object is a long rectangular form with a rounded end. It casts considerable insight onto how the technology works. This piece likely would have been pressed together with another one of its type to mold the metal into form. On the interior you can see a clear elevated outline of the rectangular form. The metal would have filled within the depression to take shape. On the exterior there is a 9.29mm wide line that runs across the length. The coloration of this ceramic object is not homogenous. It is pale red and reddish grey. On the exterior there is some indication -- with the darker coloration -- of subjection to extreme heat. The clay composition is coarse. It appears to be thoroughly tempered with sand and/or some sort of degraded white material. We appear to be missing one small piece of this side of the crucible where the mold for the handle attachment would have been.
