Remarks

This locus was characterized by a dark brown soil matrix directly underlying the topsoil. It was rich in bio organics giving it an almost black coloring. It is primarily differentiated from the topsoil by its clay-like feel, small granular although fairly loose clasts, and the presence of a number of large stones 10-20cm in size. These stones were our first indication that there may be a wall contained within the unit (in the eastern half of the original quadrant). This locus was originally created when the unit was 4x4m in size. As we expanded the unit, locus 6 was created to differentiate the finds in the northern and eastern extents since the density of material cultural was considerably greater in those areas.
