Elevations taken from Datum 15; metrics and photo will be added upon completion of the locus. Locus 16 refers to the area north and immediately east of wall (locus) 9. In its eastern part, this locus underlies locus 13 (the collapse context of wall 15 that contained a high density of fractured cultural material). This locus is intended to refer to the area immediately outside or extramural space for the semi-circular structure. The sediment is medium brownish gray soil in color. It is fine-grained -- with small clasts -- and contains few stone inclusions (3-7cm), which is considerably different from that of locus 13. It is fairly loose and ashy in composition, in stark contrast to the compact clay-like matrices we have encountered elsewhere in the unit. Upon first creating the locus, its extent was not overtly clear. It took a few attempts to aptly trace the extension of wall 9 -- and accordingly to differentiate between locus 7 enclosed within the structure and locus 16 outside. Upon following the wall, it seems that within the confines of this trench, locus 16 is not really visible to the north and is mostly east of the architecture. This is because the semi-circular arch (wall 9) is wider than previously anticipated and likely extends further into the baulk.
