Gegharot Trench 38

This trench was created based on the findings in the 1x1m unit T37J. We originally extended the trenchette 3 meters N and 3 meters W. Upon continued excavations this 4x4m trench grew over the course of the 2016 and 2017 seasons into a 10 by 16m meter unit. C14 findings verified that this area had multiple phases of EB construction. In its final form, this area appears to have functioned as a mortuary complex. We uncovered three tombs, two situated within the structure and one, containing the remains of a single infant, exterior to it. Built immediately west of a 15m long north-south terracing wall, this area appears to have functioned as a major locus of cultural activity. The presence of the hearth structure, evidence of multiple mortuary interments, and sheer volume of cultural activity has pressed us to reconsider the nature of early bronze age occupation on the slope. Notable finds from this area include a bronze ring and awl, paste beads, and an earring. The materials uncovered in this area were impressively -- and exclusively from the early bronze age. While there is some indication, based on the ceramic materials of EBI and EBII pottery, it is difficult to discern.
